As a member of the lockdown generation, I know firsthand the lingering trauma that so many families experience on a daily basis thanks to our gun violence epidemic in this country. My own experiences—from a shooting at FSU to a close family member’s life-altering injury due to a gun accident—have left indelible marks on my heart and mind. I also have seen the lasting impacts of that trauma, working with and supporting communities recovering from mass shootings during my time at the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

These aren’t just stories; they’re painful realities that millions of Americans live with every day. The daily fear that shadows us—whether we’re at the grocery store, movie theater, or simply sending our children to school—doesn’t have to be part of American life. This is ultimately a policy choice, and we owe it to each other, to the memories of those lost, and to future generations to stand up and say, “enough.”

I am proud to have earned the ‘Gun Sense Candidate’ distinction from Moms Demand Action, which recognizes the importance of electing candidates who will keep our kids, families, and communities safe. In Congress, I will stand up to the gun lobby and work to pass commonsense gun safety laws, including safe storage of firearms, universal background checks, and red flag laws to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals.
